From New York to Paris, Shanghai to Sweden, major cities around the world have material libraries — After working with and visiting material libraries internationally, Hyloh has brought the concept to Melbourne: a space where designers, architects, sustainability professionals and innovators can get hands-on with the materials shaping what comes next.
The Melbourne Material Library is like a candy store. Step inside and encounter living moss, 100% bio-based insulation, the future of hemp, injection-mouldable seaweed and materials made from things you’d never expect.

there are no sustainable materials.
Rather than labelling materials as simply “sustainable”, we take a transparent approach — exploring their lower-carbon potential, material health considerations, social impact and circular opportunities, while recognising that every material has trade-offs.
The library brings together local suppliers alongside international best-in-class examples of material innovation, spanning product, packaging and the built environment. The collection includes approximately 80 material samples across different stages of technological readiness.
